110 Years of Baseball in Sheboygan, Wisconsin
1886-1996
This work represents an attempt to outline the 100-year history of baseball in Sheboygan. A great deal of credit must go to George Buchanan, an umpire, semi-professional player and fan who wrote Sliding Home with Father Time, an account of Sheboygan baseball from its beginning through 1926. In his preface, Buchanan paid tribute to Cleon Walfoort of The Sheboygan Press sports staff, who assisted in compiling the narrative.
Just as Buchanan was indebted to Walfoort, so is this writer indebted to Sheboygan Press sports editors Dick Jarvis and Dwight Pelkin, whose day by day and year by year accounts of the games and of the seasons made it possible to complete the work that Buchanan began.
It must be pointed out, too, that The Sheboygan Press itself, under the leadership of Charles Broughton, A. Matt Werner and later the Werner family, was an instrumental contributor in many ways to baseball in Sheboygan. The Sheboygan baseball community owes a considerable debt of gratitude to The Sheboygan Press.
Following, then, is a history of Sheboygan baseball from its beginnings in 1886 through the present. This work is dedicated to the future of that great game in our community.
