Former Sheboygan A’s manager Dave Moyer, who led the club to its first Wisconsin State League championship in 1991 and added another in 1997 has authored a novel. As the title Life and Life Only indicates, the book is about life, baseball and the poetry of writer/performer Bob Dylan.

Moyer will be at Mead Public Library on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 6:30 p.m. for a meet and greet book signing after which a social will be held at Legend Larry’s on 8th and Pennsylvania Ave. The book will be available there, but can also be ordered via the link on the A’s website. For every book sold via the A’s website, Moyer will make a donation to the Wildwood Rally Park Improvement fund.

The initial press release on the debut novel follows:

Learning to Live After Youth’s Dreams Fade Away
New Novel Combines Baseball, Bob Dylan, Love and Second Chances

CHICAGO – Many Americans are finding in today’s economic climate that dreams they’ve had have faded away, but life must keep going. In Dave Moyer’s new novel Life and Life Only, an all-star baseball player who had big hopes of making the major leagues and falling in love watches his dreams disappear after a sports injury and a crumbling marriage.

Dan Mason is an all-American boy armed with a 92 mph fastball and a raging passion for success. He’s drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the eighth round following his senior baseball season of high school, but rather than sign a professional contract, Dan elects to take his blue eyes and golden arm south to the University of Georgia. There, he meets the girl of his dreams, southern belle Anna Jean Simpson.

On the verge of achieving both of his lifelong dreams– pitching in the major leagues and conquering the affections of the beautiful Anna Jean–fate conspires against young Dan, and he encounters a series of seemingly random blows. As Dan endures constant heartache and loss, he struggles with his faith, attempts to repair a fractured relationship with his mother and tries to hold onto his wife and daughter. When fortune steps in and Dan gets a second chance at life, he has the opportunity to pay forward a favor bestowed on him by a person he never even knew– that is, if he can find the pluck to pull it off. Moyer writes:

Dan decided that, if he could not totally immerse himself in baseball, he had to let it go. He could control that. He did not want to associate regret, remorse, melancholy, or any other bittersweet or upsetting emotion with baseball. He wanted to remember himself as a baseball player—the one who had been awarded a scholarship to Georgia, who had pitched in the Cape Cod League, who had beaten Georgia Tech, and who had proved at thirty-five he could still throw—and he wanted that memory to be pure.
