A’s Off to Hot Start in 2016

Save for a three-inning stretch against Kenosha, the only thing that seems to be able to stop the Sheboygan A’s this year is the weather.
Holding a 10-1 record after pounding Manitowoc Tuesday night, the red-hot A’s were rained out at De Pere Wednesday night when heavy hail-bearing thunderstorms were predicted for the Green Bay area. It marked the third rainout of the young season.
The Manitowoc rainout was rescheduled as part of Tuesday’s doubleheader. Talks are underway with Menasha and De Pere. The A’s pounded the young, rebuilding Bandits, 16-2.
When they get on the field, the A’s are living up to their pre-season billing. As a team, they are hitting .324, while A’s pitchers are holding opponents to a .208 batting average and 2.40 earned runs per game.
Longtime A’s general manager Denny Moyer ranks this year’s line-up as one of the best ever to wear the cardinal and white.
The long ball has been the A’s friend this year. The A’s hit 17 home runs all of last year; they have 10 in their first 11 games this year. That is particularly good news for Habitat for Humanity. A’s sponsor and friend of Habitat, Wisconsin Bank and Trust is donating $100 to Habitat for Humanity for every home run the A’s hit this year.
No less than eight A’s players are hitting over.300. Wyatt Olson (Niagara) and Cole Heili (UW-Milwaukee) lead at .455 and .436. Then comes Weston Nelson (UW-Stevens Point) .385, Harry Steldt (UW-Stevens Point Alum) .375, Brad Young (Lakeland College Alum) .364, Mitch Sutton (UW-La Crosse) .357, Taylor Grimm (UW-Oshkosh) .344 and Trevor Cho (St. Cloud St.) .324.
“It’s a good team and they can hit, but there is a tough schedule ahead, including nine games against Lombard and Menasha,” Moyer said.
The A’s play at West Allis Thursday and host Appleton Friday in the second Fish FRYday Night of the season.
The Sheboygan A's are members of the Wisconsin State League and Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League. The A's have helped develop more than 43 players that have reached professional baseball, including 2002 World Series Champion Jarrod Washburn (Anaheim Angels).
