Wild Finish Propels A’s to Victory

SHEBOYGAN, WI – The Sheboygan A’s fans got their money’s worth Wednesday night.

It isn’t often that the home team treats you to a grand slam home run and then gets a win on a walk-off suicide squeeze in the bottom of the ninth inning, but that’s exactly what happened Wednesday night as the A’s battled with the Appleton Legends, but ultimately came out on top with a score of 5-4.

The win came when Ben Gordon got the bunt down in front of the hard-charging Adam Ryan for a perfectly executed suicide squeeze. It came two pitches after the first attempt rolled foul.

It was Ryan who hit the third inning “slam” enabling the A’s to take a 4-2 lead. Evan Bohman hit a two-run home run in the first for Appleton. The Legends picked up two runs on four straight hits in the seventh inning to tie the game at four.

The bottom of the ninth was action packed for the A’s. The A’s had the bases loaded with only one out when Gordon stepped up to bat and put down the but to score Ryan.

Mitch Gardner earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, allowing zero hits, striking out two and walking one. Brady Nehring gave the A’s a great start and recorded 10 strikeouts before tiring after seven.

Ryan and Chris Saltzman lead the team at the plate each collecting two hits on the night.

The A’s play in West Allis Thursday night to finish a game that was stopped after three innings and once completed will play the regularly scheduled game. The A’s hold a 4-0 lead going into the fourth inning of the suspended game. They return home Friday night to kick off the Wisconsin State League Challenge that will find all the State League teams playing games at Wildwood Park. The A’s open against Oshkosh at 7:30 PM.

The A’s are 16-7 overall and 7-3 in the Northeastern Wisconsin League.
