SHEBOYGAN, WI- Saturday’s first game of the day for the A’s against the Pewaukee Muskies was a heartbreaker, as they lost the lead late in a 3-2 defeat.

The A’s took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning – the final inning of regulation as all tournament games are seven innings in length. The Muskies had two runners on base with two outs. Eric Schmitz induced a routine ground ball to third base, but in a rare event, A’s third baseman Harry Steldt misplayed the ball, allowing both runners to score and tie the game.

The game went into extra innings to determine a winner. It was tied at two with the Muskies batting in the top of the tenth when Mike Rufer singled off of Ben Folger, driving in one run to take the victory.

On the offensive side of things for the A’s, Adam Ryan, Cole Miklavcic, Grant Kosanke, Joe Vyskocil and Josh Moses each collected one hit to lead the team.

On the defensive side of things, the pitching was strong on both sides. The Muskies pitchers struck out eight, while the A’s sat down eight on the night.

Eric Schmitz started the game for the A’s. He tossed eight innings, giving up two runs, four hits and striking out six. Cameron Godinsky started the game for the Muskies.

In game 2, the A’s couldn’t keep up with West Allis Nighthawks and fell 4-3.

The A’s took an early lead in the first inning when Joe Vyskocil hit a two run homerun, but the A’s were able to maintain this lead throughout the remainder of the game.

In the bottom of the second, the Nighthawks tied things up at two, and took the lead for good after scoring two runs in the third.

Vyskocil, Grant Kosanke, Taylor Grimm, Josh Moses, Ben Gordon and Weston Nelson each collected one hit to lead the team offensively.

Rodney Valdez took the loss for the A’s. He tossed four innings, surrendering four runs, five hits and striking out five. Alex Tomoter earned the win for the Nighthawks.

With these two losses, the A’s finished with a 1-2 record in the Wisconsin Amateur Baseball Classic. The A’s return to league play on Monday as they are on the road to take on the Manitowoc Bandits.
