Sheboygan A's Baseball

A’s Top Manitowoc, 7-6

Posted: July 18, 2017

Losers in six of their last nine games, the Sheboygan A’s decided to shelve the pressure, shake things up and have some fun Monday night.

With pitchers in the outfield and position players on the mound, the A’s eked out a 7-6 win over the Bandits at Manitowoc. The Bandits have had roster problems this season and after forfeiting a couple games this year, they were suspended by the Northeastern Wisconsin League. This is in addition to multiple forefeits during the 2016 season. But the club had a benefit for the Salvation Army scheduled for Monday the A’s agreed to play the game. Regardless of the actual score, the NEWBL will recognize the game as a 9-0 victory by forfeit for the A’s.

With Harry Steldt on the mound, the A’s took a 5-0 early lead but had to hold off comeback attempts by Manitowoc and salvaged the 1-run win. John Vander Ploeg with a pair of doubles and Rodney Valdes with a single and double led the hitting for the A’s. Steldt, judged the most effective of four pitchers, was awarded the win.

The A’s step back into the pressure cooker tonight with a game at Green Bay. The top four Northeastern Wisconsin League teams are in a knot with every game bearing the critical label the rest of the way. Appleton leads the NEW at 9-3, Green Bay is 7-3, Menasha and Sheboygan 9-5. Teams are playing for seeds and home-field advantage the upcoming playoffs.
