A’s defeat Dodgers; Lombard Looms

Posted: July 21, 2017

SHEBOYGAN, WI- A perfectly executed suicide squeeze ignited a 4-run sixth inning that, after they subdued De Pere’s 2-run rally in the seventh, gave the A’s a critical 6-5 Wisconsin State League victory.

With one out in the sixth and the A’s trailing 3-2, Mitch Sutton recorded his third hit and Mark Wanner’s fly ball was misplayed giving the A’s runners on second and third and when Hunter Berry walked, the bases were loaded. Weston Nelson then singled, also for the third time and the A’s were tied.

Here Grant Kosanke stepped in and with Wanner charging down the line toward him Kosanke dumped the ball and the sliding Wanner and everybody else was safe. The A’s scored two more after that, but so did De Pere in the top of the seventh before Aidan Wojciechowski pitched out of it and took the win.

John VanderPloeg started the game for the A’s. He pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs, three hits and striking out three.

Offensively, Sutton and Nelson lead the team, each collecting three hits on the night, while the team itself collected a total of 11.

This win puts the A’s at 15-7 in the Wisconsin State League while Lombard is 18-3, 3½ games ahead. The two teams play a four game series in Sheboygan this weekend. But first is an important Northeastern Wisconsin the game at Green Bay tonight. Only two games separate the top four teams that league and the A’s and the in Green Bay Storm are two of those teams.
