A’s Roll to Big Win

Posted: August 1, 2017

GREEN BAY, WI- “It’s over,” is what, to a man, the Sheboygan A’s were thinking as they celebrated their win in the Green Bay visitors’ dugout Monday night.

It was more than a rousing 18-0 win over the Storm that the A’s were celebrating. They were celebrating the end of a debilitating month that saw them play 30 games between July 5 and July 31.

More importantly, their “it’s over” referred to the most recent stretch that saw them lose eight of their last 10 games, many by big scores.

But last night they were humming on all cylinders.

It started with Eric Schmitz, who went the distance with a 4-hit shutout. He struck out eight.

They pounded out 21 hits with every starter getting at least one and Zac Cain getting six. Yes, six.

Cain became the third player in Sheboygan A’s history to get six hits. Lee Wetenkamp did it on May 31, 1987 against Waukegan and Jason Bartelt did it on Aug. 6, 2001 against Manitowoc. Cain had a home run, two doubles, and three base hits. He scored five runs and drove in two.

Harry Steldt drove in six runs with a single, double and home run; Josh Moses a double and two singles and Chris Saltzman a single and home run.

The A’s, 30-22 for the season, open State Tournament play Wednesday at 7 p.m. against West Allis. If they win, they play the De Pere-Kenosha winner Friday night at 7; if they lose they play the loser of that game Friday at 9 p.m.

The Sheboygan A's are members of the Wisconsin State League and Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League. The A's have helped develop more than 43 players that have reached professional baseball, including 2002 World Series Champion Jarrod Washburn (Anaheim Angels). All Sheboygan A's home games are played at Wildwood Baseball Park in Sheboygan. Connect with the A's on FacebookTwitterInstagram and YouTube.
