Schmitz, Valdes, Saltzman Earn All-NEWBL Second Team Honors

The Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League today announced its major award winners and all-league teams.

Sheboygan A’s pitchers Eric Schmitz (UW-Whitewater alum) and Rodney Valdes (Indian Hills Junior College) along with outfielder Chris Saltzman (Minnesota-Duluth)  were named to the Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League All-League Second Team.

Schmitz, a UW-Whitewater alum, just completed his fifth season with the A’s and was again one of the A’s top pitchers all season long. His final season stats included a 2.24 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 64.1 innings pitched. He appeared in 12 games total during 2017, including 10 starts.

Valdes, a native of Panama City, Panama, just completed his first season with the A’s. He came to the A’s from Indian Hills Junior College and finished the season with 59 strikeouts in 51.2 innings. He was a regular in the team’s starting rotation all season long, starting 10 games, and making appearances on the mound in 13. 

Saltzman, an outfielder from Minnesota-Duluth, appeared in 44 games for the A’s in 2017. He averaged just under a hit-per-game, finishing with a .281 batting average and 39 hits while compiling a .364 on-base percentage. 

The Sheboygan A's are members of the Wisconsin State League and Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League. The A's have helped develop more than 43 players that have reached professional baseball, including 2002 World Series Champion Jarrod Washburn (Anaheim Angels).
