2019 Roster Starting to Come Together

Posted: May 16, 2019

With Opening Day just eight days way, the 2019 roster is coming together.

Player-Manager Derek Loomans will have several key veterans returning this season, which he will need to help guide what might me one of the youngest A’s teams Sheboygan has ever fielded.

Additions to the roster include returnees Zac Cain (Upper Iowa University), Ryan Fields (Edgewood College), Ben Gordon (Upper Iowa University Alum), Cole Miklavcic (Marian University Alum), Kyle Peterson (Ripon College), Kyle Moyer. New first year players include Alex Dee (University of Illinois-Chicago), Jake Falish (Marian University), and JJ Zywiciel (Concordia University).

Cain, entering his third season, holds a career .405 batting average in 28 games. He saw limited action in only nine games in 2018, but hit just under .500 at .483 in 19 games in 2017.

Appearing in 44 games in 2018, infielder Ryan Fields is back for his second season. He will be looked at to hold down the middle-infield and supply some offense in the bottom half of the lineup. Fields hit .234 with six doubles in his first season with the club.

A’s veteran Ben Gordon is back for his sixth season. Gordon brings versatility to the A’s, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Known mostly as a catcher, Gordon can also play the middle-infield or even third base if necessary. Gordon brings solid base running ability to the A’s lineup.

A key fixture of the A’s center field, Cole Miklavcic is back for his fifth season. He holds a career .284 batting average. Miklavcic is known for his elite base-running ability, having stolen 26 bases in his prior four season.

Sheboygan Falls native Kyle Peterson is back for his third season with the club. The Ripon College infielder is coming off a 2018 campaign that saw him hit .292. Peterson provides solid depth for the A’s, and is a fully capable starter. Peterson may be leaned on to eat a few innings on the mound as well. He pitched 5.1 innings of relief in 2018 allowing zero earned runs and walking only one, while striking out five.

A name that should sound familiar to A’s fans, Kyle Moyer, grandson of A’s General Manager Denny Moyer, is back in 2019. Moyer adds depth to the A’s bullpen and can occasionally spot-start when needed.

Headlining the list of new players for 2019 is University of Illinois-Chicago infielder Alex Dee. The Division One redshirt junior comes to the A’s from Onalaska, WI. He holds a UIC career batting average of .263, including a .300 average his freshman year. He was named a Freshman All-American in 2016.

Jake Flaish, although new the A’s roster, is not new to the A’s. He has spent the last three years with A’s arch-rival Kenosha. This year, however, he joins the A’s and will be looked to anchor the A’s middle-infield. Starting a shortstop since his freshman year, Falish hit .267 this past spring for Marian University.

JJ Zywiciel joins the A’s for the first time this season. He is currently a sophomore at Concordia University in Mequon, where he hit .250 in 24 games for the Falcons.

The 2019 Sheboygan A’s season, presented by Meijer, begins Saturday, May 25, at Wildwood Park against the Kewaskum A’s at 12:30 p.m. Opening Day, presented by CITGO, also features the A’s 5th Annual 5K Home Run/Walk in the morning, and a post-game concert by Cold Soda Club. Race participants will receive a ticket to the game and concert, while game attendees will also get the concert for free. The A’s are now accepting group reservations for the tailgate pavilion, Advanced Comfort Systems Skybox, and the brand new Bud Light Party Deck.
