A’s Wrap-Up Season at NEWBL Round Robin

Posted: August 5, 2019

Limping through the past two weeks, the Sheboygan A’s will wrap up 2019 play in the Northeastern Wisconsin Baseball League Round Robin Tournament in the Fox Cities this week.

On Tuesday (Aug. 6) at Menasha’s Koslo Park the A’s will play Appleton at 6:30 p.m. They will follow that with a game against Menasha at 8:30 p.m. They will then end the 2019 season with an 8:30 p.m. game on Thursday Aug 8 at Kimberly’s Sunset Park.

The bus leaves Wildwood Park at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday and at 6:15 p.m. Thursday. A’s followers are welcome to ride along.

The A’s have lost eight of their last 11 games, and skipper Derek Loomans is trying to hold a team together that has been decimated by injuries. It all began when veteran pitcher Taylor Schwarz got hurt in game 1 and never returned. Then they lost:

– outfielder Mark Wanner (Division 2 Washburn University) who was hitting .333 and leading the club in most categories when he suffered a broken arm in his 19th game.

– outfielder TD Walker (Division 1 Jacksonville University) was slowed by back problems and finally had to give in to it after 16 games

– infielder Zach Lechnir (headed for Division 1 Central Michigan) took a bad hop in the face and suffered his third concussion of the year in only his third game with the club

– outfielder Drew Lechnir (also headed for Central Michigan) was hitting .275 in 32 games when he went out with a foot injury

-pitcher and back-up catcher Brad Rindfleisch (Division 3 UW-Stout) was wooed and signed by the Eau Claire Cavaliers of the Northwoods Collegiate League.

The club did improve its personnel situation by adding three solid Legion players, infielders Jacob Neese and Brent Widder from the Sheboygan Legion and pitcher Adam Diedrich from the Manitowoc Legion.

Fans are reminded that while the season is winding down, Athletic Club activities are not.

The jackpot will be over $4,000 in their bingo session this Thursday, Aug. 8 at Ss. Cyril. First number call is at 6:30 p.m.

The annual golf outing is set for Aug. 18 at Town and Country. Interested golfers or those who just wish to join the club for dinner and post golf festivities can contact Scott Stangel at 920-458-7368.

A brat fry and bake sale will be held at Miesfeld’s on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fans willing to contribute to the bake sale are urged to contact Donna Moyer, 920-458-6377.
