A'S CRUISE TO 10TH VICTORY

2009-12-09

A combination of excellent pitching and driving hitting for the A’s and uncharacteristic shoddy fielding on the part of DePere resulted in a rousing 12-2 mercy rule victory over the De Pere RiverBandits.

The win gives the A’s a 7-0 record on the Northeastern Wisconsin League, a 10-1 mark overall and a 6-game winning streak heading into their critical 4-game series against the Eau Claire Cavaliers.

The A’s meet the Cavs at 5 p.m. this afternoon and 12 noon Sunday. Both games are doubleheaders. Preceeding all that is a 3 p.m. historical exhibition of baseball as it was played in the 19th century. Gene Mand, Dave Gehr, Rick Reiss, Rick Baumgart, Mike Martin, Dave Kober, Don Diener, Dick Oehldrich, Gary Oehldrich, Pete Schroeder, Scott Stangel and Chris Wright among others are scheduled to participate in the demonstration.

Mitchell Gardner toyed with a no-hitter through four innings and limited De Pere to just two runs as the A’s got yet another great start from their pitching staff.

Nohl Depies recorded the A’s first home rune of the year, a 3-run blast that spurred the club to a 4-0 first inning lead. The A’s added another run in the second, two more in the fourth and blew the game apart with five error-aided runs in the sixth.

Doubles by Taylor Schwarz and Tim Patzman keyed the 2-run sixth and Lucas Wilsing’s 3-run double highlighted the sixth.

Matt Schilter had a double and two singles, Patzman, Wilsing and Schwarz a single and double and Depies his home run to lead the hitting. Wilsing and Depies drove in three runs, Schilter and Patzman two.

The usual weekend brats and burgers will be available Saturday and Sunday.
